Digital Texturing

Assignment 1 - Alchemist & Designer

part 1-

For this assignment the goal was to merge two or more material created in Alchemist. Then export them as .jpg's and import them into Designer. In Designer we were supposed to combine Metallic, Roughness and AO files into a Mask. When finished we then loaded the texture into Unity to screenshot. We also took our own texture pictures for this assignment. I went to Upper Park for mine and collected lots of great texture. I combined both of these textures and added a stone texture to complete my stone walkway. It also looked way better in Substance then it did in Unity.

part 2-

For the other part of this assignment we followed Substance Designer tutorials to create designated substances. Those being mud, bricks, metal and wood. Sadly I only got to metal and brick because I underestimated how long the tutorials would take and did not even finish the brick.

Assignment 2 - Substance Painter Tutorials - Lantern and Essential Training

This was probably my favorite assignment so far this semester. Again I underestimated how long these tutorials would take and only got the Lantern done, which took me a whole day to complete but I had fun with it. A model was provided for this assignment, with a high poly model and one for an ID map. A rust texture was also provided but I changed it to my liking. I did not come across too many problems expect for time management. I did also have trouble with getting the glass to look good when rendering. It was way too dark at first and even after messing with it a while I still think it should be lighter.

Assignment 3 - Knife Retopology and Texturing

In this assignment we were provided three knife models to retopologize, UV, texture and renderin Unity. The knife models provided were high poly models from photogrammetry and white light scanning. So, to be able to texture these in Substance we had to retopologize them using the Quad Draw tool. There was a tutorial for the first knife given but I had to figure out the other two on my own. After finishing the retopology and UV'ing on second knife, sadly my computer froze up and I ended up loosing everything. After crying for a few minutes, I started on the third knife, which I guessed was supposed to be made out of all wood. I was able to retopologize this one rather fast even though it looked intimidating at first. The main issue I had with this assignment is getting the HDRI environment to work in Unity after uploading all my knifes. I watched multiple tutorials on how to do it and every time the background would just get dark instead of showing the HDRI image. So i was forced to just take screenshots with the regular, ugly Unity background and lighting. This was pretty upsetting after all the work I put into this assignment.
