Senior Portfolio

Final Post:

Wow, what a crazy last semester. It is honestly a huge bummer I won't be taking this class again and seeing everyone's awesome work next semester. But I do know that I will continue to try progress every week artistically because of this class.

My goal for this semester was to improve my concept art and animations. I sadly did not do any animations for this class but it was because I was having so much fun with my drawings. So to me I do not feel as if I failed on that. And I was able to improve my animations in other classes.

Now that I am a lot more confident in my digital drawings, I am going to start creating my own 2D animations, to hopefully someday get into adult 2D comedy. Who knows where I will end up though but I am super grateful for everything I have learned and versatility that I have now.

I do wish I was able to complete a lot more drawings and characters but I do have to give myself credit because of how rough of a semester I had outside of class. And will continue to create more because I love doing it.

I know this blog post was supposed to be a review on what I've done this semester, but I did end up doing a drawing this week cause I couldn't sleep and I thought I would share it. I feel it really shows my progression with drawing on my iPad using procreate, as I am sure you will see too by scrolling down the page.

To me, I feel like this drawing more so represents who I am as an artist. Looking back at my other pieces really makes me think "what was I thinking". I used the character design challenge as a way to keep me motivated but with that it also tarnished my passion for drawing. This drawing was purely out of my love for drawing and I just got lost in it, so much so I stayed up all night doing it, when I actually did not have to get it done. It is still not complete but I know I will continue to work on it and add more detail.

It also made me realize that I was not taking the right approach with my other drawings. Because I was doing the Character design challenge, I focused on planning out my character way too much and lost my own flow. This drawing was not planned at all, I just found a cool image of an underwater model for reference and went with it and this is how it turned out;

Thank you so much Mark for being an amazing instructor.

Week 13-

For this week, I was mainly focusing on finishing my rigging project for 432 and that took up practically all my free time. But I was able to start sketching another tattoo design for my friend Ryan. He asked for a traditional styled black and white, snake and dagger tattoo.

This yet again, is not a style that I am used to but I still had a lot of fun doing this sketch. I is still far from being finished but he likes it so far so thats great. I know that this is still pretty unrelated but hey, maybe down the road I could be a tattoo artist. Who knows.

I started out drawing this on my Wacom tablet and quickly wanted to switch back to my ipad. Procreate on the ipad is just so much more comfortable to me. I like the set up of procreate a lot more than photoshop too.

I do feel like my drawing feels a bit harsh with all of the black ink, so I will probably try to lessen that up a bit. On skin it would look pretty cool though.

I do not have pictures of my Rig, but I do want to show it off because I've spent so much time on it. When I am done, I would like to do a little goofy animation with it to really test its functionality. I will be posting pictures of that in the morning.

But here is what I have so far of my Traditional Snake and Dagger tattoo;

Week 12-

Well I did not get what I wanted to get done this week because of an unfortunate situation that I got stuck in. But I thought I would show you guys something I have been working on the side for a friend. It is super random to this class but it is better than nothing.

My friend Brady asked me to draw him up a tattoo design because he loved my art, super sweet of him. He gave me a handful of pictures of tattoo styles he liked and said he was getting it on his ribs so it was going to be pretty big, but I really had no idea how big. It wasn't really my style of art but I tried my best to create the style he wanted.

So, a couple of weeks ago now I drew him up a pretty quick sketch on my iPad, not spending too much time on detail because I guessed the tattoo artist would probably change it anyway.

But to my surprise, Brady already has gotten it tattooed on himself. It is huge! And honestly I didn't think he would actually follow through with it. The tattoo artist actually just fully copied my piece and went with it. (He did make the glob super flat looking though and messed up some other parts but it's fine) Hopefully he really likes it! haha

I would upload my sketch but I am currently not staying at my house so I do not currently have access to it but I will try to upload soon!

So here it is,

Week 11-

So this week I continued with my animation from my 545 Class because it is due tomorrow. For this week I worked on the clean up and tips that I got from this class last week in lecture. I also started doing Rods lip and facial animation which turned out to be way harder than I thought. He talks super fast in some parts. This is the most intense lip animation I have had to do, so I am going to have to work hard next week to finish it.

This rig is just the worst though, I cannot say it enough. The lip controls are very difficult to work with and its just so frustrating. But I do feel like I have a strong start to it, just a long ways to go and not much time to complete.

Just noticed typing this too that I forgot to relax Denise's hands in this first part too. So I will need to fix that as well. I was hoping to have all the lip syncing done tonight but with the circumstances of this hell week I was not able to follow through.

Hope you like it;

Week 10-

So for this week I mainly focused on my animation for my 545 class. I am finally to the splining process and some facial animation with this piece.

I thought about starting another animation for this class which I still very well might do but I do want my portion of this animation to look really good. That is why I would love some feedback from the class tomorrow.

I did a ton of clean up to try and make movements look more natural like Ron's bow. I also really focused on adding more to Denise's movements. I added the hair flip at the end to make her not as stiff looking. I also focused on her a lot because I like her rig a lot better than Ron's. In fact I actually hate Ron's rig which sucks but I am dealing.

Anyway here is what I have so far;

Week 9-

So I guess spring break threw me off and I thought I had already showed you guys my final drawing. I am pretty bummed that I did that and didn't end up getting points for this post but oh well.:(

I did not like how the bottom of my character turned out but at least I was able to get something turned in for the Character design challenge.

So here it is;

Week 7-

So I do not have a whole lot to talk about in my blog this week but I did put a ton of time into my drawing. It is actually turning out pretty cool but I still have quite a bit to do and it is due tomorrow night. So I just really hope I am able to pull it off. Cause I am still having a hard time deciding on what his lower body is going to look like but I am thinking it will be close to what his arm is looking like.

I was't planning on doing such a detailed foreground but this last weekend I kind of got carried away and had a lot of fun drawing mushrooms. I am hoping it doesn't take too much attention away from my character.

Wish me luck with getting everything done before tomorrow night! Hope you like it so far.

Week 6-

So for this week I was not able to focus fully on my drawing but I did a few things for other classes that I would like to get feed back on. Mainly on my First Pass animation for 545. For my first Block out scene, I rushed it and did not like how it turned out. So for this one I tried to focus on clean up and adding in-betweens.

By adding the in-betweens I did seem to mess other stuff up, so I know there is a lot more clean up to do but it is a lot better from the first. I really tried to push my poses and make it a bit more interesting. I do need to exaggerate a lot more but it is getting somewhere! Here is the YouTube video-

I did get a little done on my drawing but just mostly a super rough sketch of my warriors armor. I keep changing it and I am still not super happy with the shape. The upper body is turning out fine but I am not super sure how to dress his lower half. I need to do some more research and get some inspiration for that.

Next week I will be putting most of my focus on this because the due date is already coming so soon. Spring break really threw me off. I was planning to get a lot done but I ended up working almost 40 hours instead. Anyway, here is what I got done this week for that -

Week 5-

Okay, I know I said I was going to do an animation for the next time around but I kind of got excited about this months challenge and started drawing. I wanted to start early this time so I wont be pushing it to the last minute again. Here is a story the group created to kind of go off of for possible inspiration.

For this week I gathered reference from other artists to get some inspiration for my own design. I was contemplating creating a cute mushroom warrior or a creepy one. And knowing me I went with a more creepy design. I saw this one drawing of a skull overgrown with mushrooms and liked the idea of the warrior being an ancient kind that has really become a part of the forest. Maybe even mushrooms took over the world turning humans and animals into parts of them. Like using them as a host of some sort.

Here are the reference photos I gathered, these were just my favorites but I also studied lots of different types of mushrooms as well.

Here is what I have so far,

I want to have him holding an awesome sword over his shoulder and wearing old, mossy armor. I am also going to make this drawing way more colorful than the last and I am also drawing it on a way bigger canvas to reduce pixilation.

Week 4-

The Due date for this assignment was Tuesday night at 11:59. Time has been really flying by for me lately and I did not get as far with my drawing as I would have liked.

I was wanting to add a third masked man in the back but did not end up having enough time so I took him out. Because of that there is way too much negative space in the scene and that really bugs me. There was a lot more detail and color I wanted to add but it didn’t work out

For next time I will be using more bright colors and create more of a cartoon style character. And a also be using a higher resolution because by I had to create a Post on Facebook and then they approved it and reposted it. By this time the picture did loose a lot of detail and resolution, so that was kind of a bummer too.

All in all, I am glad I gave this challenge a shot even though the theme wasn’t my favorite. And I am pretty proud of what I was able to do for my first IPad drawing.

Here is how it turned out..

Week 3-

This week I mainly focused on my main character and her color. I only have a couple of days to completely finish this project but I will have all day Saturday to do it. Her face took me a really long time because I had to redo it a few times and mess with the coloration a ton. I did have a lot of fun with the beads but I still have some detail work to do there and in the crown. I'm not super worried about the masked figures because they will be all black so it shouldn't take me very long.

I am kind of worried people wont get the concept idea, so I will be making a judgement call on whether or not to keep the masked men in the back. But I wont really know until I have it a little more complete. I know it does not seem like I completed a lot this week but I actually put in at least an hour every night this week messing with it.. I was hoping to be in a better place tonight but I still have a few days to finish it up.

Week 2-

So, last week I mentioned the character design challenge and I followed through with that idea this week. After I finish this challenge I will start doing a fun little animation but this week drawing sounded great to me.

Someone recommended Procreate to me on the iPad. I recently got a Apple Pencil for it and wanted to try it out. I did watch a few beginner tutorials on in and messed around with the settings for a while.

For the Character design challenge, I read through the rules for this month and did a lot of research on Thai culture and dancing. After learning more about it, I went to Pinterest and Google for lots of reference photos. This took me a really long time to finally decide on an idea because I didn't just want to draw a dancer. I wanted to make it unique somehow. At first I did think of drawing a fire blowing dancer with a dark background but then I saw some kind of creepy puppeteers.

They were wearing black masks and making a Thai dancer puppet act out stories. I thought it would be super cool to draw a super realistic Thai dancer puppet being controlled by creepy dark beings in the dark background.

I plan to make the puppet super colorful to make her stand out and be the center of attention. Part of the challenge is to make one main character design, so I do not want the Puppeteers taking away all the attention but technically they are a part of the main character.

I was only able to start two of the masked characters this week, but I had a lot of fun drawing on the iPad and I know I will get a lot more done this weekend.

Here are some of my reference photos,

Here is what I have so far,

On another note, this is a rig that I would like to use to do a short animation. I haven't really used a more cartoony rig yet, so I thought that would be really fun.
I will probably focus on movement more than anything with this rig and maybe to light audio animation. I will probably get a funny reference video of a child on youtube and try to match that energy.

https://gumroad.com/l/niceguyrig

If the mouth controls are good enough I would really like to do this scene in The Campaign. He would be one of the kids for that scene. But I would have to fins other cartoony characters as well.

Week 1 Post-

So starting off this semester a week late but I still have a few ideas for how this semester will go.

My first plan is to be choosing some audio and blocking out my scene. I will be picking some audio and shooting reference for next week. I kinda want to try a scene that brings more serious emotion to the table because I tend to lean towards more light hearted scenes.

I also would like to start doing this Character Design Challenge every month. Character design challenge is a facebook/social media group that posts a new theme to follow every month. There are certain rules you have to follow and have to finish in a timeframe. I would like to use this as kind of a side project and not my main focus because I really want to improve my animating skills. But I am taking other animation courses so I will be doing that on weeks I want so switch things up a bit.
